Which is more expensive, hard-sealing or soft-sealing? What is the difference?
The same sealing requirements apply; hard seals are more expensive. Soft seals are easy to implement, but they do not have high temperature resistance.

For example, in the case of ball valves, soft seals are generally made of polytetrafluoroethylene, and it seems that they can only withstand temperatures below 120°C. The hard seal seems to be made of metal using surfacing technology, allowing it to withstand high temperatures.

The difference between hard-sealing and soft-sealing lies in the valve seat. Ball valves are known to have dual valve seats, which provide good sealing performance. Soft-sealing valve seats are typically made of PTFE and are used in applications where the medium temperature is not high and strict leakage controls are required; soft-sealing can achieve a leakage rate of level 6. The hard-sealed valve seat is made of metal, which gives it high temperature resistance; its leakage rate is at level 5, allowing it to be used in environments with relatively harsh conditions. The hard-sealed valve seat and the ball are typically subjected to surface treatment methods such as welding, spraying, and grinding
I don’t think it’s necessarily the case; it depends on the situation. For example, in the case of single-seat valves, I have a soft-seal valve core and a hard-seal valve core. The shape of the hard-seal valve core is formed in one single processing step, while for the soft-seal version, I need to first manufacture the corresponding components, then combine them together and finally shape them; as a result, the cost of the soft-seal version ends up being higher than that of the hard-seal version.
