Thermocouple wire is the wire used to create the sensing point of a thermocouple. Compensation wires are used solely to extend the thermocouple signal to the instrument where it is read. Compensation wires generally have lower temperature limits in terms of the surrounding environment; that is, they can transmit signals of higher temperatures obtained from the probe, but they themselves are not exposed to such high temperatures. Thermocouple wires can be used as compensation wires, but compensation wires cannot be used to create the sensing junction of a thermocouple.

Compensation wires are made of two base metals with thermoelectric properties similar to those of thermocouples, whereas thermocouples are typically made of two noble metals. By using base metals with similar thermoelectric properties to the thermocouple, the cold end of the thermocouple is extended to a location with relatively stable temperature, in order to reduce the impact of fluctuations in the cold-end temperature on temperature measurement. By using base metals to extend the thermocouple, the measurement error is very small and remains within the acceptable range.

The thermocouple compensation wire has a thermoelectromotive force similar to that of the thermocouple at temperatures below 100°C. Its function is to extend the cold end of the thermocouple from an area with unstable temperature to a control room with relatively stable temperature, thereby compensating for the cold end of the thermocouple and acting as an extension for it. Compensation wires are made of relatively inexpensive metal materials to help reduce costs.
