I joined the company as an electrical engineer; it was my first time working in the petrochemical industry, as I had been working with PLCs before. Recently, my colleague in the instrumentation department left, so I have more free time, and all the instrumentation work has been assigned to me. I also want to learn knowledge in this area. Since no one is available to teach me, I have to learn on my own*. Could you, experienced folks, advise me on how to get started and what materials I should consult? Thank you
What’s the compensation like for this job of adjusting instruments? In the PLC industry that I’m familiar with, the price starts at around 20,000. Why does it seem like it’s getting narrower as we go further?
In remote cities, let alone the benefits. Electrical jobs pay well, but there are usually too many business trips; there’s no way around it. I originally planned to change jobs, but since there were no good opportunities, I have to keep working where I am for now.
Personally, I think PLCs offer a wider range of employment opportunities and higher salary potential. It’s a bit of a pity.
It seems that the number of people in my hometown who work with PLCs can be counted on one hand and one foot; I travel a lot for work, and my family doesn’t allow it :( I’ve posted my resume online – I’ll consider other opportunities when the time comes. For now, I’m focused on doing my current job well and learning new things.
The difference isn’t that big. I’ve also seen fitters working on instruments.
The best approach is to go through the manuals for valves, relays, solenoid valves, differential pressure transmitters, etc., within the instrumentation and control scope under your jurisdiction—the more manuals you can gather, the better. This is because they contain the underlying principles... You made the right choice. Learning knowledge is always beneficial; kudos to you! ! ! For reference.
Are you referring to the development of PLCs? It can’t be that high just for debugging the configuration. If possible, please introduce me to them~
In fact, PLCs fall under the category of automatic control systems; if they are to be classified as electrical devices, then they can barely be considered part of that category – they are actually more similar to instruments.
Yes, what was done before was also quite limited – it only involved writing and debugging PLC programs. There’s a significant difference compared to the instruments I’m used to working with in the petrochemical industry these days.

Entering the chemical industry and becoming familiar with chemical process instruments is also very helpful for expanding the applications of PLCs, as PLCs are widely used in the chemical industry as well.
