Dear colleagues, I have been working for ten years and am now in middle age. I specialize in instrumentation; currently, I work as an operations engineer for a listed company. My salary is average, and there are few opportunities for career advancement or financial improvement, though the job is stable and requires a lot of work. So I want to work in a different city from home; the company offers decent benefits ； There is another option: due to lack of familiarity with system programming, one might want to work at a system manufacturer in another location on programming and debugging tasks, with frequent business trips; the main goal is to learn about that specific system, which could offer more career opportunities ； The last option is to find a new construction project and participate in the factory’s construction, thereby gaining experience in the entire process—from design and process management to commissioning and operation. With these three options—either not leaving the current job to take care of the family—how should one make a choice? Working in a different city from home still doesn’t sit well with my wife, especially since the kids are young. Deep down, I still want to work on projects at system manufacturers in order to acquire the skills that are lacking in this area; once I have those skills, I’ll be able to work for clients doing maintenance tasks, or at least have a better position when it comes to negotiating salary. I have done design work before; now I am involved in maintenance and management, and my skills in system programming are somewhat limited.
First, family factors need to be taken into consideration; if your wife and children object to working in a different city from home, then you might want to put this idea on hold for now. Therefore, choosing to work on projects at a systems vendor is also a good option. At the same time, participating in factory construction is also a good option; it allows one to become familiar with the entire design and management process, thereby improving one’s managerial skills. Finally, it is necessary to take various factors into consideration, including personal career plans, family circumstances, working conditions, and so on, in order to choose the option that suits one best. .
Based on the above, it seems to be a person with a sheep-like personality; therefore, it is advised to focus on the present. If it’s a wolf-like personality, then after enduring ten years of hard work without changing jobs, one should have reached a leadership position by now. Doing purely technical work is suitable for people with a sheep-like personality. If one also takes on some leadership responsibilities, improving the nature of the position will enable them to receive other benefits.
