Air filters, solenoid valves, and limit switches (valve position indicators) are the three core components of pneumatic control; together they form a standard open-loop control circuit. Their coordinated operation is essential for the stable functioning of valves, and their selection, configuration, and maintenance directly affect the control accuracy and the lifespan of the equipment. As the core unit for purifying the air supply, the air filter removes impurities such as moisture and rust from compressed air, thereby preventing corrosion of the racks inside the actuators and accelerating the aging of seals, and ensuring the cleanliness of the air supply. The core configuration requirements are: the filtration precision must be maintained between 5–40 μm, and an automatic drain valve is standard at the bottom to allow for the timely removal of condensate water ; The port size should be selected based on the air consumption of the actuator (calculated per action cycle); the common interfaces are G1/4" or G1/2" ; In low-temperature environments (such as below -10°C), models with electric heating or manual drainage should be used to prevent the filter cup from freezing and becoming clogged. The solenoid valve performs the function of controlling the direction of airflow, and it is key to linking control signals with the actual actions carried out. The selection must be carefully matched to the type of actuator: a double-acting actuator (which remains in its current position in the event of power loss), along with a two-position five-way solenoid valve; by switching between powered and unpowered states, it controls the opening and closing of the valve respectively ; A single-acting actuator (which returns to a safe position via a spring in the event of power loss) is used, along with a two-position three-way single-coil solenoid valve; when powered, air is introduced to drive the valve into action, while exhaust air is used for reset when power is lost. Selection precautions: An insufficient Cv value of the solenoid valve prolongs its operating time, potentially leading to water hammer and damage to seals ; For explosion-proof areas, solenoid valves with the appropriate Ex rating must be used, along with matching coils, to ensure that the explosion-proof properties are met. The limit switch (valve positioner) is a valve position feedback unit that serves to feed back the actual open or closed state of the valve to the control system (such as DCS), thereby ensuring a closed-loop control system. It is installed in the NAMUR-standard slot at the top of the actuator; it comes in mechanical and inductive types. As the main shaft rotates in sync with the valve, it causes the internal cam to press against a microswitch or activate a proximity sensor, thereby generating two separate signals indicating when the device is in the open or closed position. Common faults are often caused by deviations in cam angle adjustment (such as the valve being fully closed yet the switch not being activated), or by water entering the wiring box, which leads to false signal readings. During debugging, it is necessary to first manually adjust the valve to its fully closed position, calibrate the cam for that position so that the switch is activated, and then adjust it to the fully open position to calibrate the cam for that setting as well. Operation sequence: The DCS issues a command to open the valve → The solenoid coil is energized and switches direction → Compressed air, after being filtered, enters port A of the actuator → The actuator drives the valve to rotate → When the valve is fully open, the opening cam presses against the microswitch → The switch sends a closed signal to the DCS → The DCS then turns off the valve-opening indicator light, completing one cycle of valve opening. For routine maintenance checks, it is important to pay attention to the following: inspect the water level in the filter cartridge monthly to ensure it does not exceed 1/2 of the cartridge’s capacity, and replace the filter element annually ; The solenoid valve should be tested by manually pressing the direction-changing button every quarter, and dust deposits in the exhaust port should be removed ; Every six months, tighten the wiring terminals of the limit switch, check that the cam screws are not loose, and ensure that the operation of the switch is synchronized with the actual position of the valve. Selection principles: Determine the solenoid valve model based on the actuator type (double-acting/single-acting) ; The explosion protection rating of solenoid valves and limit switches must match the on-site environment ; When the valve rotation angle is 90°, the adjustable range of the limit switch cam must be ≥90° ; In low-temperature environments (below -20°C), low-temperature silicone seals and cold-resistant cable connectors should be used to prevent component failure.
