I would like to ask everyone: apart from the regulations for thermal power plants, why don’t the instrument power distribution standards in the chemical industry specify that DCS systems must be powered by two separate power sources – one from a UPS and another from a different bus section? Is this requirement optional in the chemical industry? Is it determined by whether the project causes safety accidents during power outages? Do you know anyone from a paper mill? Does the paper industry use only one power supply to power the DCS?
The chemical industry should have the same requirements, right?
The DCS system is part of the plant control center; in the event of a major failure, it can have severe consequences or losses for the production facilities. Therefore, it should be designed as a Class 1, Type A power supply load, which means that in addition to the main power source, a backup power source must also be provided. In practical applications, UPS units can be operated in parallel (the power supply for the UPS units should come from different electrical circuits); in other words, the UPS hosts can operate in parallel while sharing the battery cabinets. This ensures the safety of the DCS power supply and simultaneously eliminates the impact of faults within the UPS units themselves.
