It is listed as hazardous waste in the 2016 revised list of hazardous wastes. The **List of Hazardous Wastes** stipulates that: “Residues and tar generated during the purification of gas in the coke production process are classified as hazardous wastes, with code 252-014-11”; “Acid tar and other types of tar produced in the coke production process are also considered hazardous wastes, with code 252-011-11”; “Coal tar resulting from the condensation of gas during gas production is a hazardous waste, with code 450-003-11”.
Code 252-014-11 stipulates that exemption can be granted during the use of materials that meet coal tar standards as raw materials for further processing.
