Quench water is required to cool the gas produced by gasification; the molten slag solidifies after being cooled by quench water, and is then discharged to the slag pool via a lockhopper. The high-temperature syngas is cooled to maintain a certain water-to-gas ratio, thereby providing qualified water-gas for the next processing stage.

Cooling water is used to cool the burners, feed ports, and furnace chamber of the gasification furnace, thereby preventing components from being damaged by high temperatures.
