Yan’an Energy Chemical Olefin Polymerization Center: Technological upgrades for polypropylene waste recycling yield results Author/Source: Yan’an Energy Chemical, Yanchang Petroleum Date: 2021-12-01 Clicks: 13 Recently, the technological upgrade system for polypropylene waste recycling at the Yan’an Energy Chemical Olefin Polymerization Center has been in use for nearly a year; over 100 tons of polypropylene waste have been recycled, generating economic benefits of more than 500,000 yuan for the company. Due to wear and tear on the extruder die and cutters in the olefin polymerization plant, products with improper particle size are generated during discharge and are treated as waste, resulting in waste over time. To address this issue, the olefin polymerization center creatively proposed adding the waste to the extruder via additives in order to re-granulate and reshape it. During this period, given that the screw used in the additive feeder has strict requirements regarding the consistency of the material, and the inclusion of waste materials of different particle sizes can lead to problems such as material sticking and blockages, the center decided to carry out technical modifications to the screw in question. By employing technical expertise and conducting repeated comparison experiments, a screw that requires fewer stringent conditions regarding material consistency and provides more stable material discharge was selected for replacement. Additionally, filtering equipment was installed at the inlet of the additive feeder to ensure the quality of the waste materials. “This technological upgrade system eliminates completely the polypropylene products with unsuitable particle sizes from the output stream; it not only helps to reduce costs and improve efficiency but also eliminates environmental risks associated with waste disposal, paving a new path for the company’s green, circular, and sustainable development. ”Zhang Bo, the professional supervisor of the center, explained.
Substandard small particles are generally collected in waste bags. The practice of adding these small particles back into the extruder poses a risk of introducing external impurities into the product. Moreover, these small particles are usually sold as lower-quality polypropylene products, not as waste; therefore, the price difference from the genuine product is not as large as one might think
