Recently, our plant carried out maintenance work on the desulfurization and denitrification systems of its 5.5-meter coke ovens; the flue gas was discharged through a large chimney. It was observed that about 10 minutes before each replacement, green smoke would emerge from the large chimney, and normal conditions would be restored after the replacement. After thorough investigation, the cause could not be identified. Could anyone help analyze what might be the reason?
The blue smoke emitted by the large chimney before the switchover may be related to the operation of the coke oven and the flow of flue gas. Before the switch, the airflow in the flue may become unstable, resulting in the emission of unburned carbon particles and other substances in the smoke. Furthermore, during maintenance, the equipment or control system may not be brought to their optimal condition, resulting in reduced combustion efficiency. It is recommended to check the operating condition of the burner before and after the replacement, as well as the adjustment of flue valves and air flow control, in order to ensure proper equipment operation and improve chimney emissions. .

Cause analysis: Impact of commutation operation: During the commutation process, the direction and pressure of the airflow inside the coke oven may change, resulting in some uncompletely burned flue gases or sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds being blown into the main chimney. During the short period before commutation, insufficient combustion or reduced efficiency in desulfurization and denitrification may occur. Problems with the desulfurization and denitrification systems: The desulfurization and denitrification units may operate unstably for a period of time after a change, resulting in ineffective removal of pollutants from the flue gas. Problems such as reduced catalyst activity or nozzle clogging can lead to a decrease in the efficiency of desulfurization and denitration. Flue system issues: Ash accumulation or blockages may exist within the flues, affecting the normal flow of exhaust gases and the efficiency of purification. There may be issues with the sealing of the flue system, resulting in the leakage of some untreated smoke. Combustion system issues: The combustion system may have improper adjustments or faults, resulting in incomplete combustion or abnormal flue gases. Unstable fuel quality or poor combustion conditions can also cause similar problems.
Before the switch, the heating system of the coke oven may have undergone some adjustments, such as changes in gas flow, air volume, or combustion conditions; these adjustments can lead to temporary incomplete combustion, thereby producing blue smoke. During the reversal process, the movement of flue dampers or air valves can cause instantaneous changes in the flow velocity and direction of the smoke gases, affecting their complete combustion.
