On October 18, Xinjiang Zhongtai Chemical Co., Ltd. announced that its holding subsidiary, Xinjiang Zhongtai New Materials Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Zhongtai New Materials”), plans to construct a demonstration project for the upgraded production of methanol through comprehensive resource utilization in the Tongxin Industrial Park in Alehui Town, Toksun County, Turpan City. The total planned investment for the project is 5.99 billion yuan, which will be used to build facilities for producing 1 million tons per year of methanol and 18,900 tons per year of sulfuric acid, as well as air separation units, gasification units, low-temperature methanol washing units for syngas purification, methanol synthesis units, and other supporting facilities. It is expected to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2024. At present, the industry for the comprehensive utilization of coal in Xinjiang, based on its classification and quality differentiation, mainly focuses on producing semi-coke through coal carbonization, with tar and raw coal gas as by-products. Abundant waste gas from rich gas fields is often used as fuel, with only its calorific value being recovered and the remaining gas being released into the atmosphere through flaring, resulting in resource waste and environmental pollution ； The by-product coke dust and coal powder are utilized at low value as thermal coal. The upgraded demonstration project for the comprehensive utilization of resources to produce methanol aims to use the waste gas generated by the lignite carbonization unit in the Zhongtai Chemical Industry Park, along with the residues (coke dust and coal powder), as raw materials to produce chemical products in an efficient manner despite their low value. Zhongtai Chemical stated that once the project is completed, it will ensure a stable supply of the raw materials used in the production of BDO, the main product of its subsidiary companies. At the same time, the BDO projects that have been built or are under construction in Xinjiang also have a demand for purchased methanol, which creates conditions for the development of the methanol market.
