Recently, ThyssenKrupp Uhde was selected for the Nova Sustainable Fuels Bio-Methanol Technology Integration Research. Planned production capacity: 450,000 metric tons of bio-methanol. Technical approach: Wood’s high-efficiency PRENFLO gasifier and advanced methanol synthesis technology. ThyssenKrupp Uhde has received a contract from Nova Sustainable Fuels (NSF), based in Halifax, to carry out integration and optimization studies for NSF’s bioconversion methanol project in Nova Scotia. This study will quantify the value of the ThyssenKrupp-Udde integrated process, including gasification and methanol synthesis, which uses sustainable wood biomass as raw material to produce over 450,000 metric tons of methanol per year. The project will utilize Uhde’s mature PRENFLO gasification technology and Uhde’s advanced methanol synthesis process. ThyssenKrupp Uhde provides both gasification and methanol synthesis technologies, and NSF aims to verify the assumed benefits in terms of overall system integration and the future profitability of the project. This research aims to provide a solid foundation for future investment decisions and represents an important step toward sustainable fuel production. NSF’s goal is to produce two key low-carbon fuels to achieve decarbonization in the transportation sector: sustainable aviation fuel and renewable methanol. These fuels will be produced using a fully integrated clean energy system that combines over 1 GW of renewable power sourced from solar and wind power plants planned by the NSF, as well as local sustainable biomass and water. Renewable methanol will help the shipping industry decarbonize, and it will serve as a universal, low-carbon component for other products such as sustainable aviation fuels and chemicals. Construction of the NSF is expected to begin in 2028 after all necessary permits are obtained, with the project slated to become operational in 2031. The first environmental assessment approval for the project was granted in December 2025.
