On March 25, Bohai Drilling Company’s Fourth Drilling Unit applied a \"methanol-based fuel\" power generation system in the operations of Drilling Team 40543, achieving a significant upgrade in drilling power from traditional fossil fuels to cleaner fuels. To drive technological advancements in drilling power systems, the company established a dedicated task force for technical improvements, working together with equipment manufacturers, research and development teams, and field operation teams to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the suitability of methanol-based power generation systems. Focusing on four key areas of technical improvement—renovation of the fuel supply system, optimization of the combustion mechanism, upgrading of anti-corrosion sealing technologies, and installation of intelligent monitoring systems—the task force conducted repeated technical discussions and simulation tests to address issues such as leaks caused by the corrosive nature of methanol. It also optimized the interior structure of the engine’s combustion chamber to suit the burning characteristics of methanol fuel, and installed specialized ignition devices along with intelligent control systems to ensure complete combustion of methanol and improve the efficiency of power conversion. At the same time, to address the technical challenges associated with methanol’s volatility and its flammability and explosiveness, the task force installed three technical protection systems: intelligent leak detection, anti-static grounding, and real-time concentration monitoring. These systems enable 24/7 automatic monitoring of fuel leaks, gas concentrations, and static electricity levels, along with audible and visual alarms, thus achieving a comprehensive upgrade in safety control technologies. The successful deployment of this \"methanol-based fuel\" power generation system has completely changed the previous reliance on diesel as the sole energy source. The upgraded new power generation system not only features an optimized equipment structure and more reliable sealing protection, but also improves both combustion efficiency and operational stability, effectively addressing the issues related to the suitability and safety of methanol fuel in drilling applications.
The application of this methanol-based fuel power generation system is indeed a good attempt! From a technical perspective, methanol can indeed reduce carbon emissions as a clean fuel; however, several factors need to be taken into account in practical applications: the stability of the supply of methanol fuel. Storing and transporting methanol requires higher standards compared to diesel, so it is essential to ensure a stable supply chain on site. Equipment compatibility and maintenance: Although the combustion mechanism has been modified, will long-term operation affect the equipment’s lifespan?
