Total investment of 1.398 billion yuan! Registration approved for Shanxi Fuyu’s 1.25 million-ton coking facility’s high-purity hydrogen production project 2025-08-26 Recently, the project to produce high-purity hydrogen from LNG-rich hydrogen-containing exhaust gases at Shanxi Fuyu Coking Co., Ltd. was approved for implementation. Shanxi Fuyu Coking Co., Ltd.’s project for producing high-purity hydrogen from LNG-rich off-gases is a supplementary initiative to its 1.25 million tons per year coking oven upgrade project. Utilizing the upgraded 6.25-meter rammed coking ovens and the LNG production facility capable of processing 40,000 Nm³/h of coking oven gas, this project involves purifying the hydrogen-rich off-gases generated during the LNG production process from coking oven gas – whose hydrogen content is around 55% – to achieve fuel cell-grade high-purity hydrogen with a purity of 99.999%, through the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology employed in collaboration with Lüliang Lanqi Energy. The project is designed with an annual production capacity of 4,000 tons. The products are primarily supplied to hydrogen refueling stations for heavy trucks in Lüliang (to meet the fuel needs of 200 such trucks), as well as for industrial use within the industrial parks. This meets the policies of Shanxi Province regarding the large-scale utilization of hydrogen produced as a by-product of the coking industry, as well as Lüliang City’s plans for the development of its hydrogen industry ; The project entered into a cooperation agreement with Lüliang Lanqi Energy in September 2024; the approval process was completed swiftly in August 2025, with the construction of the main structure set to be finished within that same year. As the first industrial-scale case of LNG-based production of high-purity hydrogen in Shanxi Province, its technical approach can reduce the cost per unit of hydrogen by about 20%. Once operational, it is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 80,000 tons per year and generate approximately 50 million yuan in tax revenue. In the future, the annual production capacity of high-purity hydrogen is planned to be increased to 10,000 tons, and by taking advantage of the wind and solar resources in Lüliang, a mixed supply model of \"green hydrogen + gray hydrogen\" will be explored. This project aims to serve as a model for reducing carbon emissions and improving efficiency in the coking industry, as well as for traditional energy companies to transition into the hydrogen sector. The upgrade project for Shanxi Fuyu Coking Co., Ltd., which involves 1.25 million tons per year of production capacity using coking ovens with a chamber height of 6.25 meters, includes the following main tasks: demolishing the existing 2 coking ovens with a chamber height of 5.5 meters along with their associated wet quenching facilities, and constructing 2 new coking ovens with 57 chambers each and a chamber height of 6.25 meters. These new ovens will be equipped with 2×170t/h dry quenching units and 1×25MW condensing steam turbine generators. The existing systems for chemical processing, coal storage, and coke treatment will also be upgraded. The remaining coke oven gas is used to support the construction of a 40,000 Nm3/h coke oven gas-to-LNG project. The total investment for the project is 1,398,020,000 yuan, of which approximately 3,488,000,000 yuan is allocated to environmental protection measures.
