The relationship between grounding and leakage protection

I would like to ask everyone: what is the relationship between grounding the enclosure of electrical equipment and installing a leakage protection switch? Is it necessary to install a leakage protector when there is grounding, or is grounding not required if a leakage protector is already in place? Or must a leakage protector be effective only when the equipment is grounded?
