Can the newly established gasoline upgrading project produce catalytically hydrogenated gasoline that can be used directly as vehicle fuel? Is it necessary to add substances like MTBE for blending? What harm does it cause to the engine? Which type of fuel is better, the one from gas stations or the blended version?
The issues you mentioned mainly depend on the various parameters of the gasoline after hydrogenation; these are specified in the feasibility study report. However, the data provided in that report are from laboratory or pilot-scale installations, and the actual results will depend on the data obtained once the installation is operational. If all the specifications meet the National V standards, it can certainly be used as vehicle fuel. If they do not meet the standards – not only in terms of octane rating but also with regard to other parameters such as boiling range, density, vapor pressure, the content of olefins and aromatics, as well as sulfur and nitrogen levels – then it cannot be used directly as vehicle fuel and needs to be blended first. The fuel at gas stations is mostly blended.
The gasoline produced through catalysis certainly cannot be used as fuel; if it could be used directly, there would be no need to establish new projects for upgrading gasoline. The sulfur content in catalyzed gasoline does not meet the required standards. With today’s strict environmental regulations, gasoline must meet National Standard 5 requirements, with a sulfur content of less than 10 ppm. MTBE is used to adjust the octane rating of gasoline, to ensure that its octane level meets the specified standards. It is the octane rating that has the greatest impact on engines, and gasoline used as fuel must adhere to the standards set by National Standard 5!

At present, the sulfur content in the feedstock for catalytic gasoline here is between 500 and 600 ppm; the reaction temperature is low, which results in a loss of about one unit in octane rating. After hydrogenation of catalytic gasoline, its octane rating, following etherification, is around 88 to 90, and MTBE needs to be added to reach 92.
