In the methanol catalytic cracking hydrogen production process at our facility, during the unloading of methanol from tank trucks, it was found that some of these trucks were not using specialized tanks for transporting methanol; in some cases, they were even used to transport oil products. However, during our training, the manufacturer stated that fresh methanol should be used, with no contamination allowed, and that attention must be paid to every step in order to protect the catalyst. It is recommended that vehicles that have been filled with other types of fuel should not be used to fill with methanol. Methanol should not cause contamination; there are standards for using methanol in methanol-to-hydrogen conversion – check the technical specifications in the operation manual. Using oil is definitely not acceptable, as it affects the catalyst’s lifespan. When methanol arrives, samples can be taken for inspection before unloading it. A simple and straightforward method is to take a sample and visually check for oil spots; if there are oil spots or other unknown substances, it is not recommended to use the product after unloading it.
There are specific technical requirements for methanol used in hydrogen production via methanol cracking; please refer to the relevant sections of your operation manual or consult the process manufacturer for details. Otherwise, it will severely affect the catalyst’s lifespan; this is based on the same principle as strictly controlling the chloride ion content and conductivity of deionized water in the methanol-to-hydrogen production process – the aim is to protect the catalyst, prevent disproportionation reactions, and increase the hydrogen production rate. There are many types of substandard methanol: issues such as high impurity content and oil contamination.

There were things like oil flowers, but none were present. The test results also showed that everything was within acceptable limits, though only a few parameters were tested! It was during unloading that we discovered they were using tanks that had previously held other chemicals to store methanol!
