Has anyone who uses steam trap valve assemblies noticed that leaks caused by sand holes often occur at fittings such as elbows in the condensate pipelines downstream of the traps? Has anyone analyzed the reasons for this? Is it due to a leak in the air separator or some other reason? What are the solutions? Feel free to discuss.
Check the quality of the condensate water! Also, check for material issues!
It’s likely a problem with the quality of the condensate water, as well as the material of the piping components. It’s possible that those components that require heat treatment haven’t been treated accordingly, especially those made from special materials
Isn’t the principle behind this problem quite simple? It’s not due to air leakage or any other reason; it’s related to the physical properties of water. Although the condensate in front of the trap reaches its boiling point, it remains a saturated liquid and does not boil under steam pressure. Once it exits the trap and is no longer under pressure, it immediately reaches its boiling point, with bubbles forming continuously; especially at the turbulent areas around bends, numerous bubbles collide with the pipes, causing cavitation. The most cost-effective method is to, whenever such issues arise with elbows in a certain area, replace them with thick-walled elbows and add an additional layer of material to the outer surface, bringing the thickness to 20 mm; this will suffice for three years. After all, as long as it’s not a pressure pipeline, simply increasing the thickness for reinforcement is enough
The solution is to change the elbow into a tee, with a gasket at the elbow.
Has anyone checked for leaks in the water strainer?
The main issue with modifying the elbows is that it incurs high costs related to scaffolding and insulation; therefore, it’s best to find a solution that will resolve the problem once and for all, otherwise the repair costs will be very high
