Components from C5 to C11 belong to gasoline, and those from C11 to C22 belong to diesel. The number ‘C’ indicates the number of carbon atoms in a hydrocarbon compound; each hydrocarbon is composed of alkanes and alkenes. For example, C1 corresponds to methane, C2 to ethane and ethylene; C3 corresponds to propane and propylene; C4 corresponds to butane, butene, isobutane, and isobutylene (isomers begin to appear starting from C4).
