Why can’t oxygen be supplemented in confined space operations by using oxygen or oxygen-enriched air?
Too high an oxygen concentration is also harmful to the human body
An increase in the oxygen concentration in confined spaces can cause combustible materials to burn more intensely, increasing the risk of fires or explosions. Some substances may be oxidized to a greater extent, leading to rapid aging and degradation. GB 8958-2006 Safety Regulations for Operations with Oxygen Deficiency hazards stipulates that the oxygen content in the work area should be above 19.5% ； The AQ 3028-2008 Safety Regulations for Work in Confined Spaces in Chemical Production Units stipulate that the oxygen level in confined spaces should be between 19.5% and 21%, and shall not exceed 23% in oxygen-rich environments.
Our factory has a rule: the use of factory air or instrument air to supply air in confined spaces is strictly prohibited. Only fans can be used to supply air. The main purpose is to prevent accidents caused by nitrogen mixing in the instrument air or plant air. This is something that requires special attention in plants where nitrogen is used as a backup air source for instruments!
