Case Study – Identifying the Odor of Hydrogenated Diesel

Here’s a case: hydrogenated diesel had an unpleasant odor; its sulfur content was below 10 ppm, yet the diesel carried a slight smell of rotten eggs. It’s clearly hydrogen sulfide, but when you smell it again, you can’t detect any odor. Therefore, when testing the sampled diesel bottles using a four-in-one detector, it is clearly evident that there is a hydrogen sulfide content of several dozen ppm present. Therefore, the diesel delivery process was inspected, and it was found through investigation that there were significant changes in the data before and after the low-grade oil heat exchanger during diesel delivery, which indicated a minor leak in the heat exchanger. Later, according to calculations, the leakage rate was approximately 0.2 t/h.
