Besides the pre-sulfurization of the catalyst, how is the amount of sulfur to be added during the reaction determined? Do all hydrogenation and cracking processes require sulfur supplementation?
I have not seen sulfurization in the hydrogenation and hydrocracking of petroleum products, but it is used in coal-to-oil processes
Under normal circumstances, sulfur supplementation is not required except for pre-vulcanization. In special situations, such as during large-scale circulation of the unit or when the desulfurization efficiency is low, sulfur needs to be added in certain amounts to prevent catalyst reduction
Generally, high-sulfur feedstocks do not require sulfur supplementation, and desulfurization units must be installed in the recycled hydrogen; hydrogen sulfide serves mainly to protect the activity of the catalysts. Raw materials are important; coal tar is generally sulfurized.
That’s what I think: the amount of hydrogen multiplied by the desired concentration gives the number of moles, and multiplying that by the molecular weight yields the mass flow rate; for cracking, it’s usually 500 ppm.
Hydrogenation shouldn’t be necessary; the sulfur content in the raw material is sufficient to cover the needs.
