Experts, please share what form the cetane number improvers you are using are in Why does Sinopec not allow the use of nitro-based cetane improvers?
Common cetane number improvers include isooctyl nitrate types and peroxide types. The nitro-based additive you mentioned is likely isooctyl nitrate. This substance is of the ester type and has a certain degree of water solubility; if an ester-based additive is used, it is easy to fail the diesel water separation test. Furthermore, although ester-type additives can increase the cetane number, they have an impact on engine emissions, such as NOx. This is just my humble opinion; I welcome corrections from all the experts out there.

Sinopec won’t reveal the reasons for prohibiting its use; I can only tell you that Sinopec purchases around 18,000 tons of isooctyl nitrate-based cetane improvers each year.
