On July 28, reporters were informed that the 1 million tons per year pyrolysis gasoline hydrogenation unit at Jilin Petrochemical, which utilizes the core catalyst technology developed by the Petroleum Chemical Research Institute, has successfully produced qualified hydrogenated gasoline. The successful commissioning of this unit marks an important advancement in the industrial application of the research institute’s pyrolysis gasoline hydrogenation catalyst technology. This unit is the first to come online as part of Jilin Petrochemical’s 1.2 million tons per year ethylene upgrading project. It is currently the most capable hydroprocessing unit for pyrolysis gasoline in China, and it represents a key step in achieving the company’s strategic transformation toward reducing oil production and increasing chemical product output. Once the unit is put into operation, it can convert the pyrolysis gasoline produced as a by-product of upstream ethylene plants into hydrogenated gasoline products with high added value. This helps to improve the efficiency of comprehensive resource utilization, optimize the product portfolio, and provide a stable supply of raw materials for downstream units such as aromatic extraction facilities. This successful drive was the result of efficient collaboration between the Petrochemical Research Institute and Jilin Petrochemical. Leveraging its expertise in catalyst technology, the R&D team at the Petrochemical Research Institute provided customized and efficient catalyst solutions for the project, offering technical support at key stages such as catalyst loading, activation, and commissioning. The on-site technical and operational team at Jilin Petrochemical carried out their tasks with care, strictly following the startup plan, which ensured the smooth implementation of the technology. The successful operation of this device provides technical support for Jilin Petrochemical to receive the pyrolysis gasoline feedstock produced by the newly built ethylene plant. The experience gained in its construction and operation will provide valuable practical guidance for the design, construction, and commissioning of similar facilities in various key projects such as Guangxi Petrochemical and the second phase of Dushanzi-Tarim.
