The accurately defined term for the circulating slurry in the slurry-bed vacuum residue hydrogenation tower is “quasi-liquid” or semi-coke; it is a pseudoplastic fluid and belongs to the category of non-Newtonian fluids. When the fluid is at rest, its molecular chains quickly entangle and interlock with one another, forming a highly viscous network structure similar to that of a solid. Along with solid coke particles (with less than 16% THF) and catalysts (with a size of less than 50 μm), these elements accumulate and cause coking; therefore, the slurry system must be kept free from stagnant flow and low-temperature conditions.
