While looking at consultation materials today, I came across the concept of acid-base refining for diesel – what is the principle behind this? I’ve never heard of it before
Acid-base refining is a relatively traditional process in diesel processing. In simple terms, it involves using sulfuric acid to remove sulfur- and nitrogen-containing impurities from diesel (such as thiol compounds and basic nitrides), followed by the use of alkali to neutralize the remaining acid, thereby also eliminating acidic substances like naphthenic acid. This can improve the stability and color of diesel, but the downside is that it causes significant corrosion to the equipment and generates acidic residues that are difficult to handle; as a result, many refineries have now switched to hydrorefining.
