Our company melts solid sulfur into a liquid state. Due to the acidity of sulfur, lime or caustic soda must be added to neutralize it and prevent equipment corrosion. However, during the melting process, the acidity and moisture content are quite low and subject to significant fluctuations, with the temperature of the medium ranging from 125 to 140 degrees. Are there any good methods for testing acidity, so as to better control the amount of alkali added?
Even if there are methods for detecting liquid sulfur, I can tell you with certainty that it will not be the pH method, as pH is used to determine the acidity or alkalinity of dilute aqueous solutions.
The temperature you mentioned cannot be measured either; all pH meters require that the temperature not exceed 80 degrees when used for extended periods, although the temperature to which they can be exposed momentarily can reach 160 degrees. Estimating it with test strips isn’t very accurate either!
Developing this isn’t a difficult task; I probably won’t do it myself, but here’s how it can be done: take a fixed amount of sulfur sample (for example, one cup), grind it, add one cup of distilled water, stir, and perform an online pH measurement. There’s no need to clean any components during the measurement process – a rough measurement is sufficient
Can’t find such a product anywhere in the world? I wonder if there is such equipment in sulfur production plants?
