The principle of desulfurization using alkaline solutions involves absorbing the acidic sulfur dioxide into the alkaline solution to form sulfites, thereby immobilizing it. However, sulfites are unstable and tend to decompose back into sulfur dioxide, which affects the efficiency of desulfurization. By oxidizing them, sulfates are formed, which are highly stable and easier to handle further.
