I have a question regarding the collection of unorganized exhaust gases, an issue that is relevant to almost all industries in the chemical sector. It’s not enough to simply add a few pipes or collection hoods, or to use exhaust fans to capture the emissions – those are merely superficial solutions. When environmental inspections take place, if there’s an odor in the workshop, that’s enough to get you into trouble. Environmental inspectors don’t care whether your testing results meet various standards; they only consider whether the odor is acceptable to them. If it isn’t, then all your efforts have been in vain. I’d like to ask the experts and professionals here: is there any viable and effective method that can meet these requirements?

The key issue is that unorganized emissions cannot be contained; if they can be effectively contained, a local negative pressure environment can be created, which might yield better results.

For containers, sealed storage can be considered, using nitrogen flushing or mechanical ventilation. In buildings, there are no special solutions other than reducing leaks and ensuring that underground sewage pipes are properly sealed. For those exposed to air, consideration should be given to the recovery of escaping gases.
The treatment of unorganized VOCs is now strictly implemented in the petrochemical industry; Jiangsu and Shandong are the regions where this practice is most common, with many enterprises having been shut down for rectification. These emissions originate mainly from tank areas, loading/unloading processes, the vacuum systems of industrial units, and non-condensable gases. In workshops, volatiles are generated due to the transfer of materials between containers. Based on the experience of various factories, it is difficult to meet the requirements for continuous online monitoring of emission concentrations using methods such as activated carbon adsorption, condensation, washing, or acid-base treatment, given the low concentration, diverse composition, and large volume of these emissions. Currently, the effective ways to handle such emissions are negative pressure collection and catalytic oxidation; more than a dozen such systems have been installed in Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

The problem of uncontrolled emissions in workshops is a long-standing issue; it can be said that most tool and mold manufacturing factories suffer from it to some extent. As of now, there seems to be no effective solution that can completely address this problem. The general solutions have also been mentioned in your post; to resolve the issue completely, one must employ methods such as improved ventilation and negative pressure collection, followed by further treatment. To resolve this issue completely, frankly, the investment required is quite substantial. I think all we can do now is to collect as much as possible. For organized emissions, it’s manageable; but for unorganized emissions, apart from the methods you mentioned, I haven’t heard of any other good solutions.
