I got upset today because of an issue that arose: my workshop’s wastewater pipelines required the installation of heat tracing, and on the pipe rack located about a hundred meters away from where these pipelines would be installed, there were benzene pipelines. Other workshops that use benzene stopped us from proceeding, saying that due to the presence of those benzene pipelines, it was not safe to carry out any work, as static electricity could potentially trigger an explosion in the benzene tanks. Personally, I think this is nonsense. First of all, pipe racks are equipped with anti-static grounding, and then what danger does benzene pose? Are the pipe racks and workshops involving benzene lines not being set on fire? Although I encountered benzene for the first time this year after the change of plant manager, I had worked in gasoline and liquefied gas facilities for over a decade, always performing welding work directly on the pipe racks. Is there really any danger? Which is more sensitive to static electricity, liquefied gas or benzene? What do you all think?
