Methods for cleaning heat exchangers: 1. Mechanical cleaning: Involves the use of tools such as brushes, scrapers, or high-pressure water jets to physically remove dirt deposits. This is usually done during shutdown periods, and it effectively removes hard deposits such as scale and particulate dirt. 2. Chemical cleaning: Chemical solvents or cleaners are circulated through the heat exchanger to dissolve deposits such as scale, corrosion products, and biological fouling. Common chemicals include acids (used for scaling) and alkalis (used for organic dirt). Advantages: It can reach areas that cannot be accessed by mechanical cleaning, such as the inside of pipes. 3. Water jet treatment: Use high-pressure water jets to clean the surface of the heat exchanger. Hydraulic jetting can effectively remove hard deposits such as scale, and it can be combined with chemical cleaning for better results. 4. Pipe cleaning: Pipe cleaning involves using flexible foam or rubber pigs to force them through the pipes of the heat exchanger in order to remove dirt. This method is effective in tubular heat exchangers, but it is limited to specific geometries. 5. Online cleaning systems: Automatic pipe cleaners: These systems clean the heat exchangers continuously or periodically while they are in operation. A sponge ball or brush is circulated through the pipes to prevent dirt from accumulating. Backwashing: Reversing the flow direction to remove dirt from the surface of the heat exchanger.
