For the feed inlet of a distillation column reflux tank, it may have a safety top, or it may be fed from below the liquid level. What determines the difference between these options, and what are the relevant standards and specifications? What are the advantages of each approach?
It mainly depends on the location, the height of the condenser and the reflux tank (personal opinion)

I originally designed one where the feed entered from the bottom. The reason is that the condenser is positioned too low; if feeding from the top, the high liquid level inside the condenser reduces the condensation area.

I remember that in the past it was said to be due to safety reasons, as well as the high proportion of light components; entering from the bottom results in less loss, and the liquid phase can absorb a portion of it. If it enters from the top, it is discharged directly
Perhaps the considerations in actual production are different. But now, all reflux tanks are equipped with exhaust gas recovery systems, so there is no issue of direct emission

Yes, they are all vented as flares. But in typical refineries, the light components are usually either aromatized or purified before being used as fuel gas; it’s a shame to vent them directly – it represents a significant loss
Even if it enters from the top, it must extend to the bottom of the tank; it’s not possible to directly connect to the gas phase space and then spray in the liquid, right? ? Another thing to note is that the pipe extending from the top needs to have a break in its siphon opening.
