Multistage pump (with both balance discs and thrust bearings). Questions: 1. How is the clearance of the balance disk measured, and what is the value? 2. How is the clearance of the thrust bearing measured, and what is the value? 3. Thank you, experts; I’m completely confused
I have repaired several different types of multi-stage pumps, and the methods for adjusting them vary. The maintenance instructions should be available in the accompanying documents; actually, it’s also possible to figure out these methods by analyzing the structure of the pump itself. The values should be determined based on the manufacturer’s specifications; if these are not provided, relevant industry standards can be consulted. Generally, two dial indicators are used to measure the shaft runout
1. First, install the secondary thrust bearing and adjust the axial clearance; 2. Then install the main thrust bearing and adjust the axial clearance; the value here represents the clearance of the thrust bearing ; 3. Subtracting the value measured in step two from the value measured in step one gives the gap of the balance disc.

First, determine the axial operating position of the rotor, then determine the clearance of the thrust bearings as well as the axial clearance of the balance disk; this is the case for all multi-stage pumps
Let me tell you about this issue: after centering the pump impeller, the balance disk is fixed in place; bearings are installed, the bearings are positioned, and lock nuts are used to tighten the shaft. A dial indicator is used at the shaft end to adjust the gap of the balance disk, while the bearing caps are adjusted to set the bearing gap at [0.15–0.17]
Normally, one should first install the main thrust pads, measure the axial play, and then check the clearance between the balance disk and the balance ring, right? Then, install another thrust pad and adjust the thrust clearance.
