The problem of oil leakage from the bearing housing of centrifugal pumps occurs frequently; the main solution is to clear the passages or enlarge the oil return holes. For the labyrinth seal clearance, there is also only an empirical value of a diameter of 0.3–0.5 mm. Is there any more detailed standard value available, such as what shaft diameter corresponds to what diameter clearance?
This is usually determined based on the bearing clearance; the sealing clearance is typically 2 to 2.5 times the bearing clearance.
Check whether the ventilation holes are unobstructed! Increase the depth and width of the sealing groove appropriately! Increase the number of grooves! It’s also an effective method!

In the event of oil leakage, in addition to considering the gap of the labyrinth seal, the assembly condition of the labyrinth seal should also be taken into account. At the work site, over 90% of the cases are caused by overfilling. And the operators still refuse to change their behavior despite repeated warnings! Ah!

Generally, the lubricant level should be at the middle horizontal level of the balls (rollers) at the bottom of the bearing. During operation, it is sufficient to fill the oil level to 1/2 of the oil sight glass; if stopping the machine, the level can be filled to 2/3 of the oil sight glass. If there is an oil filler cap, fill it with 2/3 of lubricant – do not fill it to the top. A little more won’t cause oil leakage; the technicians on site usually keep the oil level (as indicated by the oil gauge) at its maximum during operation, and they also fill the oil refill container to the brim. They believe this is the only way to ensure safety! If the bearing housing uses an oil seal, there will be no oil leakage; whereas if it uses an oil baffle (labyrinth) design, oil leakage will occur. Check whether there is any blockage in the fuel tank vent. Also, do not fill the tank too much, as this can cause siphoning effects and result in lubricant continuously spilling out.
