There are many ways to lubricate pumps: lubricating grease, oil bath lubrication, oil rings, slinger rings, pressure lubrication, and full oil mist lubrication. Some suppliers also offer constant-level oil sumps as well as oils with specific ISO viscosity grades. Are these specifications determined by the design agency or by the manufacturer? How is it usually chosen?
This standard specifies that, unless otherwise stated, API pumps should use thin oil for lubrication of their bearings (rather than grease); such lubrication is chosen only when necessary. Sliding bearings and tapered roller bearings cannot be lubricated with pure oil mist. When the operating temperature exceeds 300 degrees, to use pure oil mist for lubrication, it is necessary to provide insulation for the bearing housing, use fans for cooling, or employ cleaned oil mist for lubrication. A constant-level oil cup is used to maintain the oil level in the bearing housing. The viscosity must ensure that the viscosity of the oil at operating temperature is at least 12 mm2/s; when the ambient temperature or bearing temperature is high, grade 68 is generally used, while grade 46 is more commonly employed.

When ordering the equipment, the design institute and the client specify the operating conditions and key technical requirements in the technical specifications, and the supplier selects appropriate models based on these requirements for the client to choose from. During the negotiations, the two parties can further discuss and confirm it.
