PSA pressure swing adsorption does not require a vacuum pump, as PSA involves adsorption under pressure and desorption at atmospheric pressure; therefore, a vacuum pump is not needed. In contrast, VPSA does require a vacuum pump, and the choice of vacuum pump depends on the composition of the system being separated. If oxygen is to be produced and nitrogen is to be desorbed, and a high vacuum level is not required for the desorption process, either a Roots vacuum pump or a water-ring centrifugal pump can be used. If the gas to be removed is not a flammable or explosive substance and high vacuum levels are required, then a reciprocating vacuum pump will suffice. If the gas to be removed is a flammable or explosive gas, then considerations such as mechanical seals become necessary; in some cases, diaphragm pumps are required. Additionally, the amount of gas to be released also needs to be taken into consideration; in short, it’s not something that can be explained in just a few words.
