Why are self-priming pumps/pipeline pumps mostly vertical? There’s no need for a horizontal model; isn’t it a problem to use a horizontal one due to space constraints?
It is mainly easy to install, with the inlet and outlet on a horizontal straight line. Horizontal installation requires more installation materials
If space permits, it is still recommended to use a horizontal model.
For the second edition of the Industrial Pumps Manual, my understanding is that it deals with self-priming pumps used in utility applications; in particular, the so-called teapot pumps mentioned in the book. These pumps do not require shaft seals, have a relatively higher self-priming height compared to horizontal pumps, and occupy less space
