Do double-end mechanical seals have self-sealing capability? Why is this? Could some expert who knows this explain it to me? This is the feed pump for the stripping tower in methanol distillation
Is this a single-face mechanical seal combined with that self-sealing element to form a double-face mechanical seal? What on earth is going on here?
Series seal PLAN11+52(53). The version without pressure is 52, and the one with pressure is 53A. If the main seal leaks, the liquid level pressure of 52 will rise, while the liquid level of 53A will drop

We call it self-flushing; a double-end seal creates a relatively sealed environment for sealing. The flushing schemes generally involve options 52, 53, and 54 – but those are outdated methods.
In the picture, you haven’t captured it in its entirety; what can be seen directly is PLAN21 plus PLAN52 or 53A. The comments mention 11+52 or 53A. It’s important to take a picture of whether there are vent holes on the top of that storage tank, or if it’s connected to an external pressure source – that part isn’t visible
