When the pump is installed at a height higher than the liquid level of the material, this method is used so that the pump does not need to be filled with liquid each time it is started. For example, in the case of discharging material from an underground tank, the pump is installed on the ground surface; a small tank is placed in front of the pump. Before starting the pump for the first time, the small tank is filled with material in advance. When the pump is started, it draws the material out of the small tank, creating a vacuum in its gas space. As a result, the material from the underground tank is drawn upward. No further filling is required before the next start of the pump. It is recommended to avoid using this format as much as possible; it may sound logical in theory, but problems often arise in practice. For discharging from underground tanks, submersible pumps or downhole pumps should be used as much as possible.
