Discussion on mechanical seal issues in pumps: Seal leakage in operational pumps is a persistent problem. Such issues not only affect the condition of equipment management but also place strain on environmental protection efforts, posing significant challenges for those responsible for equipment management.
It is said that it is caused by the pump running idle, but there seems to be some ambiguity regarding what constitutes idle operation versus having a small amount of material present. How long does it take for idle operation to affect the sealing performance of the mechanical seal?
The reasons for seal leakage are as follows: 1. Improper human operation; It accounts for a large proportion; 80% is an exaggeration. 2. The selection and configuration are unreasonable ; 15% 3. The main possible causes of mechanical seal leakage are as follows: 1. Particle impurities in the medium; 2. The precision at the static seal contact between the end cover and the rotor/stator during installation or replacement is insufficient. Mechanical seals are often damaged, causing wear on the shaft surface; insufficient precision is achieved during installation…… Such phenomena will be common. 3. Normal startup, dry grinding,,,,. The second item among them deserves attention; during the next maintenance session, it is not only important to focus on the dynamic sealing contact points of the machine seal itself, but also on the smoothness of the installation joint between the spindle and the machine seal. For those that are severely worn, surface grinding and polishing are required, or the spindle needs to be replaced. For reference.
I quite agree with your opinion; in our daily operations, there are no fluctuations in the operation, and even when the machine isn’t running, seal leakage still occurs
The key issue lies in the secondary installation during repairs, a detail that is often overlooked. Back then, this problem troubled me for over a month…… Why would a new submersible sewage pump fail after just half a year of use? Why would the newly installed seals get damaged in less than a day? In the end, it was determined that the surface finish of the shaft was damaged. It’s just some experience-based advice.
You can adjust the compression amount of that mechanical seal; this is the key. The fact that it cannot run idly is a principle issue; there’s no need to discuss it
