A series mechanical seal is formed by two or more mechanically sealed end faces arranged in the same direction (Figure 11). This sealing method allows the pressure in the sealed chamber to decrease gradually, preventing the medium from leaking out. Series sealing is rarely used under normal circumstances and is only employed when the pressure is very high.
Series mechanical seals are generally used in the following applications: 1. High pressure: In equipment such as ultra-high pressure liquid pumps or compressors, single-face mechanical seals may not be able to withstand extremely high pressures; in such cases, series mechanical seals can be used to share the pressure. 2. Volatile, flammable, explosive, or toxic liquids: A tandem mechanical seal can gradually reduce the pressure in the sealing chamber, thereby preventing leaks of these hazardous liquid substances. 3. Liquids that are viscous or contain solid particles: In such conditions, the use of tandem mechanical seals can prevent the sealing surfaces from being scratched by the viscosity of the medium or by solid particles, thereby reducing wear on those surfaces. 4. High temperature: When dealing with high-temperature media, a series seal can effectively cool the heat and protect the sealing elements. These are some typical operating conditions under which a tandem mechanical seal is used, but the actual application still needs to be determined based on the equipment’s parameters and actual operating conditions. .
