Recently, the Dutch-based engineering company Iv-Offshore & Energy introduced their newly designed offshore hydrogen production platform, which is capable of producing 85,000 tons of green hydrogen per year using offshore wind power. According to information released by Iv-Offshore & Energy, the platform has a capacity of 500 MW and an output capacity of 10 tons of green hydrogen per hour ; The green hydrogen produced by the platform in one day can power over 300,000 hydrogen fuel vehicles, allowing them to travel at least 100 kilometers. The upper structure of the offshore hydrogen production platform measures 80 meters in length, 40 meters in width, and 30 meters in height – similar to the 1.3 GW high-voltage DC converter station designed by the company for the Sofia offshore wind farm in the UK for RWE. The total weight of the platform, including the upper structure and the jacket foundation, is approximately 21,000 tons, and it can be installed in waters at a depth of 45 meters. To date, Iv-Offshore & Energy has completed the full design of the offshore hydrogen production platform, covering process design, integration of the electrolyzer system, equipment balancing, as well as the design of the jacket and auxiliary systems. The company states that offshore wind farms are now located increasingly far from the coast, and the large amount of electricity generated by these wind farms cannot be simply fed into the onshore high-voltage power grid during peak hours. “To address this, hydrogen is produced using offshore wind power, thereby enabling the use of ocean energy on land. Compared to electricity, hydrogen is easier and cheaper to transport and store, and existing pipelines can be used. ”
