Everyone is welcome to join in the forum discussions. ------------------------------------------------------------------ On December 25, 2022, China’s largest proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer for hydrogen production was put into operation at the Zhongyuan Oilfield. This device is a key component of Sinopec’s megawatt-class demonstration project for hydrogen production using renewable energy. The photovoltaic system associated with this project has been connected to the power grid and is now generating electricity; once in operation, it will produce 1.12 tons of high-purity \"green hydrogen\" per day, providing a replicable and scalable model for the production of hydrogen from renewable energy sources in China. The proton membrane electrolysis water-to-hydrogen process used in this project is, at present, the hydrogen production technology with the best integration with wind and solar power. This process has greater \"adaptability\"; it does not require stable electricity supply, and the hydrogen production system can be shut down at any time. This facilitates the use of renewable \"green energy\" sources such as wind and solar power, which have variable output levels, and there is no emission of any pollutants throughout the entire process. The project features the largest proton exchange membrane electrolyzer for hydrogen production in China, with an electrolysis power of 2.5 megawatts, enabling higher efficiency in hydrogen production. Just as the engine is the core component of a car, the proton exchange membrane electrolysis system for hydrogen production is the key equipment of this project. It uses pure water as the electrolyte, with no chemical additives added during the electrolysis process, offering a high current density and good safety.
To convert \"green electricity\" into \"green hydrogen\", the project also includes a 3.66 megawatt photovoltaic power plant and a 9 megawatt wind power facility. The two hydrogen production supporting projects generate approximately over 25 million kWh of electricity per year. At present, the photovoltaic supporting facilities have been connected to the grid for power generation, providing green energy for the commissioning of this project. The project is led by Sinopec Zhongyuan Oilfield, with the participation of Dalian Petroleum and Chemical Research Institute, Guangzhou Engineering Co., Ltd., and Qingdao Safety Engineering Research Institute in its development. Taking this project as an opportunity, the Zhongyuan Oilfield will conduct research in areas such as hydrogen production technologies, hydrogen storage and transportation technologies, hydrogen utilization technologies, hydrogen storage safety, and the development of hydrogen energy standards. Over the next four years, the Zhongyuan Oilfield is expected to establish a \"green hydrogen\" supply center in the northern Henan region of Sinopec, with an annual production capacity of 4,500 tons, thereby promoting the scaled, efficient, and industrialized development of the hydrogen energy industry. In recent years, Sinopec has accelerated its efforts in energy transformation and industrial upgrading, and has made comprehensive progress in the development of the entire hydrogen industry chain. It has achieved breakthroughs in various fields such as hydrogen refueling stations, hydrogen production technologies, hydrogen fuel cells, and hydrogen storage materials. Currently, the company is the one with the most hydrogen stations built and operated worldwide ; Construction of the world’s largest photovoltaic green hydrogen project – the 20,000 tons per year green electricity-based hydrogen production demonstration project in Kuqa, Xinjiang – has been launched. Meanwhile, progress is being accelerated on a number of major green hydrogen refining projects in Ordos, Ulanqab, Baotou in Inner Mongolia, and Zhangzhou in Fujian, with the goal of establishing China’s leading hydrogen energy company.
