The 1.2 million tons per year coal powder pyrolysis demonstration unit at Shaanxi Coal Yulin Chemical has been operating steadily for over 240 hours. Since 7:38 am on December 26, 2022, when the unit began to process coal, the 1.2 million tons per year coal powder pyrolysis demonstration unit as part of Shaanxi Coal Group Yulin Chemical’s 15 million tons per year project for clean and efficient conversion of coal has been running steadily for more than 240 hours. The production staff and those responsible for commissioning the unit overcame various challenges such as material freezing due to the harsh winter conditions and health issues caused by COVID-19. The entire process was successfully implemented, with a coal tar yield of 17.53%, meeting the design specifications. The coal tar product was sent to the gasifier for further processing. Shengbang Technology Co., Ltd. is the provider of the technology for this demonstration unit as well as the general contractor for the project. Since joining Shaanxi Coal Group in 2010, Shengbang Company has accelerated its progress on the path toward the clean and efficient conversion of coal based on different quality levels. Through over a decade of research and development, pilot tests, and demonstration projects for million-ton-scale coal pyrolysis processes, it has developed key technologies for the optimized utilization of coal according to its various quality characteristics. The feeding trial run of the coal pyrolysis demonstration unit achieved continuous and stable operation, marking another significant breakthrough by Shengbang Technology in the field of coal valorization technology. Shengbang’s pulverized coal pyrolysis technology (SM-SP) utilizes fluidized pulverized coal pyrolysis along with an oil washing process, and it features advantages such as a high tar yield, the ability to scale up the installation size easily, good quality of the pyrolyzed coke, and a high calorific value of the gas produced. The successful exploration of the 1.2 million tons per year coal powder pyrolysis demonstration project holds pioneering strategic and innovative significance for Shaanxi Coal Group and the entire Yulin region, as well as for the energy chemicals industry or China’s coal chemicals sector. Once the pyrolysis initiation process in this project is successfully implemented, it will pave the way for a new, low-cost and high-efficiency route for producing aromatics from coal. This will enable the coordinated development of coal chemistry, petrochemical industry, and polymer materials in a manner that combines differences while also fostering integration. As a result, the demonstration effects of the advanced coal utilization technologies developed in Shaanxi, as well as the benefits of oil and gas substitution and the strategic advantages of technology transfer, will be amplified, providing a brand-new strategic solution for ensuring energy security. For China’s coal chemical industry, coal pyrolysis, as a key technology for the clean and efficient conversion of coal into various products, could enable commercial applications on a million-ton scale. This would likely change the current industrial landscape in which coal chemicals have long been subordinate to petrochemicals, opening up a new path for sustainable development in this sector characterized by high energy efficiency, high carbon conversion rates, and low emissions.
