Everyone should pay attention to safety and know how to handle emergencies. ********************************************* On January 21, 2022, the world’s first pilot project for producing ethylene glycol from straw on a scale of 1,000 tons was successfully completed at the Henan Zhongyuan DaHua Group Co., Ltd. facility in Puyang, Henan Province. This achievement laid the foundation for subsequent steps such as individual testing of mechanical equipment, system airtightness tests, water integration tests, fully establishing the production process, and conducting trial operations with actual materials. Ethylene glycol is a key raw material for producing polyesters such as PET; traditional production methods rely on petroleum-based sources, while using straw saccharification offers the advantage of sustainable raw materials. This project was developed by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with Keyuan Industrial Fund, and with the support of Zhike Baiyijin New Energy Company, Henan Energy Research Institute, Zhongyuan DaHua, and Donghua Engineering Company. Since the project began construction last April, through the joint efforts of all parties, the collaborative construction management team has optimized the construction plan on multiple occasions. The mechanical installation was completed successfully in accordance with the scheduled milestones. Through the \"three inspections and four determinations\" process, as well as nearly a month of pressure testing, purging, and calibration of instrument and valve circuits, the intermediate handover of the project was carried out successfully. The technology behind this project boasts significant advantages such as renewable raw materials, a simple production process, and low-carbon, environmentally friendly characteristics. It holds great importance for enhancing energy security, achieving the \"dual carbon goals,\" and promoting sustainable economic development. The successful progress of this pilot project will provide strong support for the subsequent development of technology packages for producing ethylene glycol on a ten-thousand-ton scale, as well as for the large-scale industrial application that involves establishing a production chain from raw materials to polyester products.
On November 4, 2021, the five main towers for the pilot-scale project on producing ethylene glycol from straw sugar at Henan Zhongyuan Dahua Group Co., Ltd. were delivered and installed one after another. To date, the main structural framework of the project has been largely completed; all equipment has arrived, with 95% of the equipment installation finished. All pumps have been installed in place, and the lower sections of the five tower units have also been installed. Next, pipeline prefabrication, piping work, and electrical and instrumentation installation will be carried out in an orderly manner on a comprehensive scale. The pilot-scale plant for producing ethylene glycol from straw sugar at Zhongyuan Dahua uses a biomass straw sugar aqueous solution and hydrogen as raw materials; through catalytic conversion in a high-temperature, high-pressure batch reactor, crude ethylene glycol is obtained, which is then refined to produce high-quality ethylene glycol products, with industrial-grade propylene glycol among other by-products. The production capacity is 746.8 tons per year for ethylene glycol, and 194.4 tons per year for propylene glycol. It is reported that this project was jointly developed by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhongke Baiyijin, Henan Energy Research Institute, and Zhongyuan DaHua Company. The launch ceremony was held at Zhongyuan DaHua on October 23, 2019.
【Project Overview】 Location of construction: Southwest corner of the intersection of Shihua Road and Pushui Road, Puyang Economic and Technical Industrial Cluster Zone in Puyang City (including Puyang Economic Development Zone), within the existing campus of Zhongyuan Dahuahua Company. Total investment: 20.98 million yuan. Construction scope: This project involves the construction of a pilot-scale ethylene glycol production facility with a capacity of 1,000 tons per year; upon completion, it will be able to produce 746.8 tons of ethylene glycol and 194.4 tons of propylene glycol per year. This project uses biomass straw sugar solutions and hydrogen as raw materials; crude ethylene glycol is synthesized through a hydrogenation reaction in the ethylene glycol synthesis section, and high-quality ethylene glycol products are obtained via the ethylene glycol distillation section, with industrial-grade propylene glycol among other by-products. The main construction facilities include processes such as ethylene glycol synthesis and ethylene glycol distillation.
