On February 8, the Environmental Impact Assessment Report for China Petrochemical Great Wall Energy Chemicals (Ningxia) Co., Ltd.’s 60,000 tons per year PTMEG new material chemicals project was made public prior to submission for approval. Project Name: 60,000 tons/year PTMEG new material chemicals project of Sinopec Great Wall Energy Chemicals (Ningxia) Co., Ltd ; Construction type: New construction ; Construction unit: Sinopec Great Wall Energy Chemical (Ningxia) Co., Ltd ; Construction location: Zone C, Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industry Base ; Construction scale: Annual production of 60,000 tons of PTMEG ; Construction contents: The main facility to be built is a 60,000-ton/year PTMEG plant (including a THF production unit), along with supporting auxiliary facilities such as power distribution rooms, explosion-proof cabinet rooms, refrigeration stations, circulating water stations, incineration units, accident ponds, and flares. Annual operating hours: 8,000 hours ; Total project investment: 938 million yuan. Polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG) is a key raw material for producing high-performance polyurethane elastomers and Spandex. It is mainly divided into products with standard molecular weights (such as PTMEG-1000, PTMEG-2000) and specially modified versions (such as those resistant to high temperatures and bio-based PTMEG). Its downstream applications cover fields such as textiles, automotive, healthcare, and 3D printing. As of 2024, China’s total PTMEG production capacity reached 1.5 million tons per year, with additional capacity under construction amounting to over 2 million tons, accounting for more than 60% of the global planned capacity. In recent years, domestic enterprises have overcome the technical barriers in PTMEG production and achieved large-scale manufacturing. Bio-based PTMEG (made from renewable resources) has entered the pilot production stage, with some companies planning to achieve mass production by 2025.
