Recently, the **key research and development project – the main project for large-scale hydrogen storage in salt caverns**, carried out in collaboration by China National Salt Industry Corporation, Tsinghua University and other institutions, officially commenced construction in Changzhou, Jiangsu. This project will provide a practical example for overcoming the key technical challenges in gaseous storage of hydrogen energy. The project focuses on key issues such as the safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of large-scale hydrogen storage. It includes 5 specific sub-projects that address various aspects including geological assessment, development of new materials, design of cavern structures, regulation of cycle safety, and engineering demonstration and validation, thereby filling the technical gaps in hydrogen storage using geological methods in China. The main project for large-scale salt cavern hydrogen storage, which is now under construction, is undertaken by China Salt Group. It involves the construction of 2 new salt caverns, along with 2 wells for hydrogen injection and extraction, and 2 wells for brine injection and drainage. These facilities will serve as platforms for testing large-scale geological hydrogen storage capabilities, allowing for experiments on the cyclic storage and release of hydrogen. The project will develop a complete set of technologies for hydrogen storage in salt caves with independent intellectual property rights, laying the foundation for the transition of hydrogen storage in salt caves from theoretical research to practical application, and ultimately facilitating its large-scale industrial use.
