Construction of 10,000-ton microbial carbon sequestration for protein production project begins

On May 15, the world’s first project of producing yeast protein through gas fermentation on a scale of 10,000 tons – the 300,000-ton microbial carbon sequestration for protein production project in Weiyuan, Sichuan (Phase I) – officially commenced construction. 　　This project is jointly invested and constructed by Xinjiang Kailong Clean Energy Co., Ltd., Jitailaibo Biotechnology Development Co., Ltd., and others, with a total investment of 2.43 billion yuan. It will be built in three phases. Among them, the first phase of the 10,000-ton project is expected to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2026. In the long term, it will develop into an industrial cluster capable of producing 300,000 tons of yeast protein annually. 　　This project employs an independent continuous process of \"single-stage gas fermentation to produce acetic acid + two-stage aerobic fermentation to produce yeast protein,\" using carbon dioxide emitted by steel plants and industrial exhaust gases as raw materials, and converting them into high-quality feed yeast protein through microbial fermentation. Among them, the cost of carbon sources is reduced by over 60% compared to traditional grain-based raw materials, giving them strong industrial competitiveness. Additionally, the entire production process does not compete with humans for food or land. The products can replace imported fish meal and soybean meal, thereby helping to resolve the long-standing bottleneck issue of China’s heavy reliance on imports for feed protein.
