I’ve been studying the new 2014 standards recently; it’s all in written form, with authoritative content. But although it seems understandable, I can’t remember it. I’m not sure what methods people use when studying industry standards such as selection criteria; I think I should study them by comparing them one by one with our own equipment. For example, if we have angle valves, we then look at the relevant standards. How do people learn?
There are too many standards, and they are complex; it’s not possible to remember them just by studying the books hard. It takes time to memorize them, and it’s necessary to refer to the guidelines when needed, so that more can be remembered. I work in a design firm; I’ve been doing this for many years. I can only remember the guidelines roughly – when accuracy is required, I have to consult the official standards. Usually I only have a general idea of things, and I know which standard is missing, but some of the most basic and commonly encountered issues need to be remembered clearly. Such as the height of the base floor in the control room, the installation height of flammable gases, the opening range of control valves, and so on. But one thing must be remembered: the standards represent the minimum requirements, and the interpretations of those standards need to be carefully examined. Some standards contain many clauses that are difficult to understand. We often invite experts who are responsible for drafting these standards to give lectures, which helps a lot as it allows us to understand the intended purpose and underlying reasoning behind certain clauses. Some standards are in a transitional phase; sometimes, when dealing with special situations that can be handled, experience is required, and experience is very important. Certain principled requirements must not be violated, such as explosion-proof requirements and the explosion resistance requirements for control rooms. Rules are just rules; meeting the rules does not necessarily guarantee that there will be no problems, and failing to meet the rules does not necessarily mean that there will be problems. But it does not meet the standards, and problems arise; when trying to determine who is responsible, issues come up. Specifications only represent general regulatory requirements and are not guarantee measures. We sometimes suffer too; we know that the regulations are actually too strict, but sometimes we have to comply with them. Regarding regulatory issues, discussion and exchange are needed; the more we debate, the clearer things become. I hope the above will be helpful to you.
I really got it now – reading the specifications made me think my brain wasn’t working properly; I would forget what I had read earlier after going on to the next part. It’s true that just reading alone isn’t enough to remember anything; it’s important to look things up more often.
