Search: Among all mechanical pumps, are there any cases where the mechanical seal does not require cooling water? ! If it’s not necessary, please explain why! Thank you!

Some are not necessary. First, it is important to understand the functions of water used in machine seals: 1. Cooling, 2. Flushing, 3. Lubrication. If the medium being transported is clean and the temperature is not high, then what is the need for it?
I’ve seen that some large pumps are useful while others aren’t; those used in situations with high medium temperatures are generally applicable, while it seems that those with low seal oil temperatures aren’t necessary, as the design varies among manufacturers. Looking forward to a good answer
In situations where the medium temperature is not high, seal cooling water is generally not required. It serves only a cooling function, ensuring that the mechanical seal’s lifespan is not affected by high temperatures.
All the mechanical seals I’ve seen are on small pumps; water seals are not used in them. As a reference, it’s probably because the pressure isn’t high – around 0.3 MPa at the outlet
None of the centrifugal pumps I use are equipped with cooling water; however, they aren’t very large, with outlet capacities of 80 or 50. They are used intermittently, and there have been no leaks in the past 10 years.

Whether cooling water is needed depends not on whether it is a large pump or a small pump, but rather on the temperature of the medium inside the pump; generally, cold pumps do not require cooling water.
Theoretically, a mechanical seal does not require sealing flush water. In practice, however, due to different application scenarios and in order to ensure the sealing performance of the mechanical seal and extend its service life, additional auxiliary systems are employed. Such as rinsing, cooling, sealing, etc. For more details, you can refer to the sealing flushing procedures outlined in API682; there are clear guidelines for different application scenarios.
